WHO IS THE #BROWNSKINGIRL?

Some, in fact, most people will see this and probably go “which kain question be this now?” but I ask that we take a closer look and this is why. I am not sure what was in the minds of Wizkid and Beyonce when they recorded the song on the Lion King album but the rave that #brownskingirl has caused online is pretty…. well, remarkable.

Pictures of black females everywhere on social media carries the hashtag and by black females everywhere, I mean females of African descent. Heck, the song referenced Lupita Nyong’o in it. This is the thing though, not all of them are black, I mean dark or may I say, brown in complexion. Some of them are fairer in complexion, or should I say, caramel or even light in complexion and they are all also singing the brown skin song, which in reality, is a tad funny because they do not have brown skin! Irony is some of them are also super dark, that you can’t call them brown anymore.

The melanin wave and appreciation of the dark skin has been on the rise recently and for good reason. This is coming on the heels of years of portraying the Western and in this case, white ideals as beauty standards for females all over. Now, it’s our time. And by our, I mean females of African descent – whether black, dark, brown, chocolate, caramel or light in complexion. They ALL are the #brownskingirl.

Beauty is universal in dark skin and even fair skin. It’s actually simple:, Beauty is Africa, Africa is beauty!
